Ebook About In 1889 Washington's then governor, Elisha Ferry, called on men of adventure to cross the Olympic Mountains, a range shrouded in mystery. The Seattle Press, the state's primary newspaper, stepped up to the challenge, sponsoring the Press Expedition. And soon departed a band of men into the mountains during one of the worst winters in recorded history...Book Across the Olympic Mountains: The Press Expedition, 1889-90 Review :
The Press Expedition was a intended to make the first transect of the Olympic Mountains in Washington State. Up to that time, no European had ever penetrated into the interior of the Olympic Mountains, and all sorts of myths swirled in the public mind concerning what was in the interior. The expedition was sponsored by the Seattle Press, basically to sell newspapers, as the public had become fascinated with what might lie in the interior. At the same time, a few other expeditions were mounting, so the Press group set off along the Elwa River on the north side in late fall of all times in order to beat the others. A winter crossing of the Olympics is not for the faint of heart, and it turned out that the winter of 1889-1890 was one of record snowfall and cold. It took the expedition several months to route-find a way across the Olympics through their very heart, but in the end, they were successful. This is an excellent account of the weeks leading up to the expedition and the expedition itself, relying on a lot of primary source material. What struck me on reading about this daunting journey is the nonchalance with which various members recorded the day-to-day happenings, despite the extreme conditions they faced. Moreover, as a mountaineer myself and one who has traveled through the Olympics and Cascades and Rocky Mts over the years, I was impressed how a single member of the party would take off for several days at a time to look for possible routes, having to hunt for food and bivouac in some very inhospitable situations with primitive gear. No one died, nor suffered serious injuries. It made me think of Teddy Roosevelt and his approach to the outdoors. These guys all seemed like Teddy, and the way they wrote about their adventure was in that vein. An excellent read! Having spent quite a bit of time in the Olympics and planning to do the Press Traverse later this year, I was keen to get my hands on this book and read about the experience of those that made the traverse under much harsher conditions. I felt the book was a good mix of narrative by the author and sections of the journals written by two of the men. A couple of spots got a bit tedious but that is bound to happen when describing a six month ordeal that really didn't cover that many miles (say in comparison to Lewis and Clark). I look forward to following in their footsteps!
